First of all, take a look around your bedroom and see how conducive to sleep it is. Is there any light coming through your window? Sunlight and bright light are cues for our body to wake up, so the last thing you need while you’re sleeping is to have any light around. Your bedroom should also be at a cool temperature, so make sure your blankets aren’t too heavy and get a fan if you need one.

Secondly, take a look at what you’re eating and drinking throughout the day. Towards the end of the day, avoid alcohol, nicotine and caffeine. All of these will make it hard for you to get a good night’s sleep. Avoid eating heavy meals toward bedtime, and go for light snacks instead. Avoid exercising too close to bed time, as it raises your body temperature and makes it harder to sleep.

Finally, practice relaxing activities before going to sleep. Listen to some relaxing music, have a warm bath, drink some herbal tea or warm milk with honey. Try and forget about any stress you may have experienced during the day, and take some time out. Stress is one of the biggest factors when it comes to difficulty sleeping. Eradicate stress, and you’ll be out like a light once darkness falls.
