In the past year, we have seen a lot of talk in the scientific community regarding the advantages of including vitamin B in your diet to help control anxiety levels. But exactly what kind of vitamin B are they talking about and what are the foods that you should be eating to achieve this advantage?

If you eat a good diet, odds are that you will get enough vitamin B in your diet through existing meals. The diets of most people in the country, however, are relatively poor. In this case, you will probably need to take supplements to ensure that you are getting all of the vitamin B that you need.

There are a number of different types of vitamin B. In experiments, however, the type that has been shown to have a positive effect on anxiety is Vitamin B1, or thiamine. For those who desire a natural source for the vitamin, you will find it in beef and other meats, milk and other dairy products, oats, and nuts and seeds.

Not only that, but a number of foods that we consume day after day such as breakfast cereals, muffins, and other breads are fortified with the vitamin. An excellent supplement to use if your body has a deficiency in thiamine is brewer’s yeast. And, for those who love fruits, oranges have an above average amount of thiamine in them.

A recurring theme in many cases of anxiety is the person having a lack of thiamine in their body. When tested, people that show signs of agitation, fear of closed or open spaces, as well as many types of psychosomatic problems – seem to have below normal levels of vitamin B.

Now, in no way does this imply that a lack of this vitamin is the underlying reason for the anxiety that the person may be feeling. Rather, it simply means that, in some way, there is a correlation between the two things. The most likely explanation is that certain people are, by nature, more prone to anxiety attacks. In these people, Thiamine, in a way, acts as a drug and helps to moderate and lessen those feelings of anxiousness.

Another B vitamin that has shown signs of having a positive effect in reducing anxiety is vitamin B8 or inositol. Unfortunately, although it has shown much promise, there have not been enough studies on this vitamin to conclusively conclude one way or another if it can be an effective, dependable treatment. Foods that have high levels of inositol include organ meats like liver, fruits such as bananas and raisins, and supplements such as wheat germ and brewer’s yeast.

When tested, many people seem to have a deficiency in vitamin B. One of the reasons is that we eat so many refined foods where this nutritional resource has been stripped from the food. To counteract this, as much as possible, try to change your diet to include more whole foods and unprocessed foods.

A panic attack while driving? How terrifying that is, and I know because it’s happened to me! If you’ve suffered the same then I know just what it was like for you. Panic attacks can spring up anywhere, anytime and scare the life out of you, but while driving has to be the most frightening.

To make things even worse, many folks, particularly women who are 2 to 3 times more likely to have panic attacks than men, have had such a bad experience that they don’t drive anymore. And that’s tough in today’s fast moving society!

Luckily there are a number of simple things you can do to stop — or at least control — panic attacks whilst driving…

1. The first thing is not to panic. Easier said than done right? Well, not if you remember that panic attacks cannot cause you any harm whatsoever. A medical fact! So, at the first signs of an attack, repeat that to yourself and face the attack head-on, don’t try to run away from it.

2. Once you realise what the initial symptoms are, and that they will not harm you, you’re in a better position to take the correct steps. And the first is to find a place that you can safely pull into to park up.

3. Open the windows, release your seat belt and relax in your seat, putting it back if necessary. Now start to normalise your breathing which will be very fast and shallow during an attack. Do this by breathing slowly, deeply and regularly in the nose and out the mouth, using your diaphragm as well as your chest.

4. If you have a paper bag, then re-breathe in this (covering your mouth and nose). This is similar to 3. above, but can re-balance the oxygen / carbon dioxide in your body much faster.

5. Forget about your panic attack symptoms by focussing externally rather than internally. If you continue ‘worrying’ about your symptoms, they will only get worse and last longer. Turn on the radio / DVD player. Focus on physical things both inside and outside the car.

6. You should now be able to get out of the car (check that it’s safe to do so first) and perhaps walk a few steps. Continue your deep, steady breathing, and keep focussing externally.

7. You should now be over the worst of it, but I would wait until you’re completely over it before attempting to drive. Make sure all your senses and faculties are working correctly. Better still, you may want to ‘phone somebody to come meet you, if possible.

These techniques will help to reduce the effect of your panic attack whilst driving.

But, for those of you who are terrified of driving, you really need to face a critical issue, and that is that it’s your very fear that can trigger an actual panic attack. So you definitely need to eliminate that fear if you want to get behind the wheel again, and get back to normal.

Let’s get this out of the way first; the symptoms of anxiety or panic attacks are much the same in women as in men. But, women are two to three times more likely to suffer anxiety attacks than men.

So what are the symptoms that provide such a terrifying experience for both women and men? Here are some of the most common symptoms.

choking sensation
shortness of breath
tightness across chest
nausea
dizziness / lightheadedness
racing heartbeat
hyperventilation
shaking / trembling
sweating
hot / cold flashes
tingling in extremeties
strong need to go to the toilet
feeling of detachment from reality
feeling of impending doom

But where on earth do these symptoms come from? To answer that you need to understand what causes an anxiety attack in the first place…

Anxiety attacks (also called panic attacks) are caused when your body triggers its primeval ‘flight or flight’ response when it believes you are in physical danger. This sets off a train of chemical and other changes in your body that prepares you to be able to fight or run away from the ‘danger’ more efficiently, in order to give you the best chance of survival. But you aren’t in any danger, it’s just that your body’s defense mechanism thought you were. So how did it make this mistake?

Well, under normal circumstances, if you yourself are instinctively aware of a dangerous situation, your anxiety and stress levels will rise to such an extent that they signal your senses that you are in danger, so your automatic defenses take over. That’s how things normally work.

But if you already have very high stress and anxiety in your life, all it takes is a stressful event or situation on top of your general anxiety to shoot your anxiety up high enough that your defenses mistake this as a signal that you are in some physical danger, thus triggering the fight or flight response. The chemical and other changes manifest themselves in the symptoms we refer to as an anxiety attack.

So you can now see that anxiety attacks symptoms cannot cause you any harm, and this is a medical fact. Grasping the significance of this fact is probably the most important step in helping you to eliminate your attacks, or, at the very least, reducing their intensity and length.

The second most important step is to understand that by concentrating on your symptoms and analysing them only prolongs the attack and makes it more intense. Remember that this is an emotional condition, not a physical one. So focus outwardly on your surroundings; people, buildings, trees, etc.

Finally, you need to get your oxygen / carbon dioxide ratio back in balance because your hyperventilating has knocked it out of kilter. You do this by using controlled, slow, deep breathing using your abdomen as well as your chest. Re-breathing into a paper bag or similar is also very good for this.

These are three very good tips to help control your anxiety attack symptoms. But to prevent future anxiety attacks you have first to get rid of your unconscious or conscious fear of having them. This fear alone can be the trigger for anxiety attacks and, so long as it’s with you, it will hold up your complete cure.

Reactive attachment disorder is one of the major child behavior problems, which create a stressful situation for parents. They find that their children often keep crying and avoid coming in close contact with anyone. Even after getting mature, they are not much in communication with closed ones and do not make friends. Furthermore, they are an underachiever and unable to concentrate on studies. Also known by the name Reactive attachment disorder, an attachment disorder takes place only if the child had to go through a difficult phase during his infancy. This is a severe mistake on the part of his parents who could not fulfill his essential requirements because they did not possess the basic parenting skills. Deprived of adequate care and attention, children are not mature enough to stand such unfavorable circumstances and therefore, they become the victims of such a behavior disorder.

If anxiety keeps you awake a night, try visualizing a time when you felt really enjoyable. The key is to feel each quality of the mental picture. Reach out and handle the first thing you can. Sniff the surroundings and feel the temperature of the air. Directly down to every final element. The more flamboyant your mental picture, the more tranquil you will think and the easier it will be to fall asleep and evade panic attacks in sleep.

People who are suffering from stroke or heart palpations are usually time after time aware of panic attacks at night. This has a large role to do with the fact that they are far more alert of the fear of failing or having something occur in their sleep because of previous occurrences. It is vital to keep in mind that dreams throughout the night have nothing to

Throughout the past 33 years in private practice, hundreds of women have told me they felt that their current health problems started soon after the birth of their child. The child may have been her first or fifth, and might now be a teenager or even a grown man or woman, but the mother remembers the postpartum onset of her symptoms as if it were yesterday.

The symptoms that usually start within the first to twelfth postpartum months vary widely among mothers. A few of the most common are despondency and despair, chronic fatigue, sleeplessness, anxiousness, lack of confidence, loss of sex drive and passion, muscle and joint pains, unhealthy skin, hair and nails, digestive disturbances, bladder problems, heart disease, trouble breathing, and a host of troubling emotions and moods swings. A woman can be puzzled, frustrated, even embarrassed when she reveals symptoms that have plagued her for years. She may have shared her self–observations with doctors only to find that they were not worthy of an acknowledgment or comforting comment from her physician. Any attempt on her part to connect the birth of one of her children with those symptoms may have been met with skepticism or passed over. Yet, she can’t shake the feeling that something about that particular birth began her health decline.

Her observations do have validity and merit. What most mainstream medical practitioners don’t fully take into consideration is that a baby’s body is formed and made entirely of nutrients donated by the mother’s body. Her child’s brain, eyes, muscles, bones, organs, glands, nerves, skin, tissues and fluids are entirely make from the nutrients taken from its mother’s bloodstream via the placenta.
If there is a lack of vital nutrients, the mother’s body is the first one that is deprived because her developing baby is Mother Nature’s priority. All mothers need to consciously replenish their lost nutritional and energetic reserves during the postpartum period. If this isn’t done, they might end up spending the rest of their lives wondering why they “just haven’t felt the same since the baby was born.”
The energy demands of caring for a newborn can further drain and deplete the mother’s nutrient reserves, especially if she is breastfeeding and sleep–deprived. If a woman has lost a great deal of blood while birthing her baby, the need for replenishing the nutritional components of blood is even more critical. Women who undergo Cesarean section also need to restore nutrient reserves; not only have they become mothers, they have had to have major surgery in the process. Women who lose a good deal of blood during the birth process and who don’t replenish key nutrients might experience light–headedness and throbbing headaches, along with extreme fatigue, sleeplessness, anxiety, and depression.

A new mother is also faced with the stress of integrating the intense needs of a new baby into her lifestyle while tending to her mate and perhaps other children and returning to work. All of these responsibilities that women – and those who are cared for by them – have taken for granted for millennia demand high–quality nutrients. Our food supply presently contains only half the nutrients that food contained in the 1940s due to the nutrient depletions in our soil. This fact makes it very difficult, if not impossible, for a mother to fully replenish the nutrient reserves her body donated to make her baby’s body solely from the food she eats. Eating highly refined and processed “junk” foods further depletes vital nutrients, which deepens the need to replenish postnatal nutrients even more.
Every physiologic process in the human body depends upon nutrients. The most important time to consciously replenish postpartum nutrient reserves begins immediately after giving birth and extends to 24 months postpartum. The failure to do this often sets the stage for chronic health problems that may last for decades.

There was a time that women throughout the globe would be given their placenta in some edible form to consume directly postpartum, much like dogs and cats do instinctively. The placenta contains highly concentrated amounts of the nutrients that the mother has lost through giving birth. The fact that eating one’s placenta is now culturally distasteful further supports the need to make a concerted effort to consume the appropriate nutrients and nourishing foods necessary for rebuilding and replenishing the new mother’s donated nutrient reserves. A high potency postnatal nutrient program is now essential to help a postpartum woman replenish her nutrient reserves.

Presently, about 30 million Americans take anti–depressant and anti–anxiety drugs. The majority of these are postpartum women! Women comprise 79% of U.S. citizens on antidepressant drugs. Many doctors prescribe Prozac, Zoloft, Paxil, Celexa, and a host of other anti–depressant drugs before considering whether the mother’s depression, anxiety, fatigue, or lethargy might be caused by postpartum nutrient depletion. All the major brain neurotransmitter chemicals (like serotonin, norepinephrine, epinephrine, dopamine and GABA) that effect mood, energy, and many other physiological process are formed entirely from nutrients! Postpartum nutritional depletion can cause a physiological depression that is far too often misdiagnosed as a mental disease. This is a medical short–sightedness that needs to change. A postnatal nutrient recovery program should be the very first thing a doctor thinks of and prescribes for postpartum women presenting these symptoms; especially with women who have no history of depression, hopelessness, anxiety, insomnia, or fatigue prior to giving birth. Continuing to take a high quality, comprehensive postnatal nutrient program can also help determine if there is truly a need for pharmaceutical antidepressant support or if replenishing nutrients are sufficient.

If one does need and benefits from the assistance of antidepressant drugs, it is still very important to note that these drugs contain no nutrients, so the need to replenish postpartum nutrient reserves still exists and should be addressed. This can also aid and prevent other postpartum health problems. The need for high potency postnatal nutrients is greater now than ever before because the pace of life keeps getting faster, more complex and stressful.

Omega–3 oils are robbed from the mother’s body at a very high rate via the placenta to help form her baby’s brain, eyes, nerves, and cellular membranes. Breast-feeding robs even more Omega 3 oils from a postpartum woman’s body because it is removed from her body to form the milk her body is producing. Many studies show the importance of Omega 3 fish oils to relieve depression, dry skin, thin hair and nails, fatigue and prevent heart disease in postpartum women. Omega 3 oils are an essential ingredient in a good postnatal nutrient program to assist a mother to replenish her nutrient reserves. It is vitally important that the Omega 3 fish oils taken be certified free of heavy metals and PCBs and also contain at least 3 different antioxidants (Vitamin E, Vitamin C, and rosemary oil are best) to prevent these oils from going rancid. Flax oil does not easily convert into DHA and EPA found in fish oils.

All the major nutrients are taken from mother’s body to help form baby’s body. Alpha Lipoic Acid and Coenzyme Q 10 are essential for the body to make energy. Without enough of these two essential nutrients, the energy producing mitochondria in our cells will often make only 2 units of ATP (cellular energy) instead of 38 units of ATP per cycle. These two deficiencies are major causes of postpartum depression, fatigue and mood swings. These two nutrients along with B vitamins, minerals including calcium and magnesium, and the Omega 3 oils are essential nutrients to help a mother replenish her postpartum nutrient reserves and should be included in a good postnatal nutrient formula. Prenatal vitamins do not adequately supply all of the nutrients that new mothers require after bringing new life into this world.

A high quality postnatal nutrient program should be an integral part of the pregnancy recovery program required for all postpartum women to fully replenish their nutrient reserves. This can assist new mothers to not only regain their health and prevent later health problems, but also to allow her the best chance of happily raising her family and having other healthy pregnancies and healthy children if desired.

Three new human studies add to an impressive body of research regarding the value of EPA- and DHA-containing fish oil for mental health and cognitive function. DHA, in particular, is considered the most biological active oil for your brain as it is the primary fatty acid that accumulates in brain cells.

The first study evaluated 46 depressed women, aged 66 – 95, in an Italian nursing home. It was an 8 week, randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial. The women took 2500 mg of DHA/EPA per day (830 mg DHA and 1670 mg EPA). The study proved quite effective as the researchers reported that the fish oil fatty acids were “efficacious in the amelioration of depressive symptoms and quality of life in the treatment of depressed elderly female patients.”

A second study looked at major depression in 432 Canadians. This study was also an 8 week, randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial. Participants consumed a rather small amount of DHA (150 mg) and EPA (1050 mg). The researchers found an overall trend of improvement comparing fish oil to placebo. However, in the group of patients with major depression that did not also have anxiety disorder, the benefit of fish oil was clearly superior to placebo. Major depression is not an easy issue to combat so any improvement is noteworthy. The fact that improvement was seen on such a low dose of DHA is actually quite impressive.

The third study was conducted with 485 healthy adults average age 55 who had been diagnosed with age-related cognitive decline (a condition heading in the direction of Alzheimer’s disease). This study was a 24 week, randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial. Participants were given 900 mg DHA or placebo. DHA blood levels were doubled compared to the placebo group at the end of the trial. The DHA group had improved learning and memory function. The researchers concluded that DHA “is a beneficial supplement that supports cognitive health with aging.”

Everyone should understand that DHA will accumulate in brain cells as time goes along, month after month. All of these human trials are relatively short and so benefit is good news; however, it is likely that benefits will be best on higher doses over longer periods of time.

In related animal-study news, DHA was found to:
1) Boost nerve rejuvenation in old rats.
2) Preserve nerve synapses and nerve health in Alzheimer’s disease mice.
3) Synergistically boosts phosphatidylserine activity in brain cell membranes, which is a key to memory and coordination.

DHA/fish oil continues to be one of the top researched nutrients around the world. Each month significant new studies are published – with no end in sight. The bottom line is fairly plain, whether young or old, don’t run low on DHA.

Panic attack is a condition which can be experienced by several individuals without them knowing that they are already suffering from this mental health problem; that is why it is very important for you to know what the panic attacks symptoms are so that the moment you observe some of its signs you can immediately seek immediate medical attention.

Bear in mind that each individual may experience different symptoms of panic attack; and some of these signs are almost the same as with other health problems. Consequently, you need to carefully assess the symptoms and try to consider having panic disorder as one of the possible causes for the occurrence of the symptom.

To assist you in identifying the problem, take note of the following panic attacks symptoms and try to observe if you are suffering from any one of them:

• Hyperventilation
• Nausea
• Fear of death
