Have you ever wondered if your excessive stress could be fuelling your bad habits like overeating, smoking, alcohol, or even drugs? Let me tell you what I think.
In all of my years of experience as a certified hypnotist my primary job has been to help my clients break their bad habits. The first thing I do is let them take a fun Stress Quiz and they know instantly if they are in living in high stress or low stress mode. Unfortunately, most of my clients are in the first category. Why? We just have too many demands on us and we try to keep up with everyone in our life wanting a piece of us until there is nothing left. And frankly, as much as I love my job, there are days when I feel like jumping back in bed, pulling the covers up over my head, and just tell the world to go away and leave me alone.
So, what can we do to survive in this crazy world we live in and learn to let go of our stress in a healthy, natural way? Why not do what I do? Learn to practice self-hypnosis?
Every day, I get “HIGH” by practicing self-hypnosis which elicits what is called the “Relaxation Response” which Dr. Herbert Benson discovered in 1975. Dr. Benson is the founding President of the Mind/Body Medical Institute; Associate Professor of Medicine, Harvard Medical School; and Chief of the Division of Behavioral Medicine at the Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center.
How does this happen? When you relax you allow your mind/body/spirit to get quiet and still, and you turn your worries and anxieties off. At this moment, you experience a feeling of total relaxation? Hey! It feels wonderful. It is legal. It is free, and you can do it anywhere but driving in a car. Why? Because you have to close your eyes!
I find that most of my clients, when first working with them, are wound up like a tight rubber band. They have all of this stress bottled up in their bodies, causing muscle tension/headaches etc. They hate how they feel and desperately want to feel better, so they have learned to reach outside of themselves to try to feel better. This means they may reach out to food for comfort or cigarettes, alcohol, or drugs. And yes, it may comfort them temporarily, but it is fleeting because it does not solve the original problem. The stress/tension is still in bottled up in your body and it comes back again and again. Does this make sense?
Did you know that one of the many, many wonderful side benefits of learning to practice self-hypnosis is that it is a natural stress releaser? Now, let me say this, nothing in your life will change. All of your same stressors will still be there, but the good news is you will notice than you can handle things better. Things just sort of slow down. You’ll notice a wonderful feeling of well-being. You will sleep better. Your self-confidence/self-esteem improves, and your memory has an opportunity to improve because who can remember things when our minds are so cluttered.
How does this happen? When you practice self-hypnosis by listening to either a Positive Affirmation or Self-Hypnosis CD, your subconscious mind that makes up 90% of your mind, is listening to these wonderful, beautiful, supportive, positive messages, and one of its main functions is to do everything within its power to make your thoughts come true for you. All of a sudden you start feeling better because your mind is responding to positive suggestions instead of negative suggestions such as, “I am so tried; I have no energy; my head and back are killing me.” Those thoughts change to, I am full of energy; I am having a great day; Life is wonderful; and Day by day I am getting better and better than the day before.” which by the way is the most powerful affirmation on the face of the earth.
