Suggestion:
When you are asleep and dreaming your body closes down the connections by which the brain tells the body to move. This stops you from acting out your dreams. This can go wrong though. In the case of sleepwalkers the link doesn't close down and they get up and do stuff in the night. The other way it can go wrong is you wake up and it's still closed down, so you can't move. Consciously, this feels like waking up in the grip of a powerful force. It can be terrifying because you have no control over your own body.
What you describe could be you waking up while still in this state, and sliding in and out of sleep, so your dreams have become blurred with a real feeling of powerlessness.
