Help You Give is Appreciated Especially to a Depressed Mate in the Relationship

Often when a person is going through a state of depression due to outside influences such as career problems or economic issues then the partner involved in the relationship suffers through it as well. Being so closely connected to a situation you feel as though the pain is yours personally.

Often the relationship cannot take the strain when the necessary tools have not been taught in order to know best how to help your partner. Even though you may be the only good thing in your partner’s life, the effects of depression causes one to act in irrational behavior patterns making you feel rejected. It is difficult to see past your problems and no matter how you try to help, it will all seem not worth the effort.

However, it does not always have to end on a sour note. Deep down inside there is the realization that someone does care and in those quiet moments it means the world to your loved one. Certainly we all realize when we are pushing someone away and the reality is you almost expect your partner to walk out the door. Inside is a frightened little child praying you’ll stay and hold their hand in the dark.

Any help you can give is appreciated.

The first step is getting the other person to acknowledge their state of depression and make the decision to conquer the emotions. There are many great books and on-line resources where research can be conducted to find out how best to deal with this type of mental disorder. Once you find out what the cause or causes are it can start to be worked on effectively.

Perhaps it started with a layoff or job displacement as many people identify themselves personally with their careers and losing that sense of self worth causes failure in the thought process. No matter how strong your relationship dealing with depression can test you both. Try not to let your partners depression cause you to lose focus on what fulfills you and don’t feel guilty about not being depressed as well. Believe it or not, depression can be contagious. Be watchful that you don’t join in on the party and look for signs that you are starting to behave in a depressed manner. It certainly would be a great idea if the two of you make appointments with a counselor or psychologist. Two people in a depressed state of mind can be no help to the other.

Every so often if you are the caretaker in the relationship working to help your depressed partner, take time away for yourself so as not to get bogged down with worry. If a person comes from a history of failed relationships they may become obsessed with feelings of doom and doubt that their current relationship may end like the others. Almost with a fatalist calling they start showing signs of depression after say one inconsequential disagreement. Talking with relationship advisers or a clergy trained in this area would be something worth checking out.

Your well meaning friends and family will be ready to offer advice but issues as serious as this should be handled by trained professionals. If you know you can help your loved one pull through the trails of a depression by all means do not give up on them. What you do no matter how small can help. A strong relationship with two committed people can handle even this tough challenge. It is a tough fight but worth the battle.

That old saying is true that love can conquer all especially when you have a vibrant, strong and growing relationship.
