How Can I Fall Asleep Faster Without Sleeping Pills?

I don't want to use sleeping pills, but I have used over the counter ones before but they didnt work too well.
I will "try" to go to sleep around 9pm and I just end up laying there untill like 11pm.
and then I end up waking up in the middle of the night and then I have to try and fall asleep again.
I guess it could be from stress but I really just want to fix it.
Thanks :)

Suggestion:

You're probably stressed as you said, you need to find what's stressing you & deal with it, in the mean time you can try drinking warm anise or spearmint drink before going to bed or try warm milk, they help you relaxing …but if the problem persists I think you should consult a doctor for this kind of insomnia coz you might need pills after all

Generally if you move around durning the day you can easily fall asleep. If it doesn't work try this.

You need to dime the lights or keep the lights low, then read a book. While reading play some soft music like Bach. get all nice and toasty warm, but it depends on what sleeping conditions you like. Some people like cold temperatures so they can get noice and comfortablely warm under neith the blankets, so that could work. After reading a b turn book for awhile, turn off the light and close your eyes. try not to open them. Think about the next day. What to wear, how to do your hair, who to talk to,what you think about subjects. Tlk to yourself in you head. Try telling yourself what you did in the day what you did wrong, what you will change, stuff like that.

Hope I could help.

The advice in your other answers seems pretty good, I'll just add something that has worked for me. There is a product called Calms the brand name is Hylands. It is a homeopathic remedy and doesn't have any side effects or negative interaction with other medications. It is safe for children (and pets, according to my vet) and doesn't leave you with a hangover. It doesn't make you sleep, it helps you sleep. I find it in the health food section of my grocery store or in almost any health food store. If you don't get relief from this or any of your other answers, you may need to resort to medical help.

I also highly recommend classical music, or even just relaxing songs that are popular (eg Hear you me-jimmy eat world/under the bridge-RHCP)
Other good ideas is to work-down towards bed time, try to avoid watching tv (not a must i do so & sleep grand).
To quote bruce lee ''trying to relax is a contradiction'' don't think about it alot of times its thinking that keeps us awake, just clear your head (maybe look into meditation as that is what it deals with) & get comfy.
You need to build a rhythm of patterns, in school we have set patterns of sleep + rise for school & we fall asleep quite easily, basically try to stick to going to bed at a usual time every night.
No need for sleeping pills, its a bad habit to rely on pills for these sort of things.

Any reason you may be under stress? if so i'd advise excercise (moderate such as a half hour walk) that generally loosens the muscles & releases certain chemicals that help us deal with stress.
