How Old Was Your Child When He/she Would Fall Asleep in His/her Own Bed Without You in the Room?

My daughter has always slept in her own room and as a baby (until approx. 17 months) she slept in a crib and never needed us in the room to fall asleep.

When we switched her to a twin bed she wouldn't sleep unless one of us was in the room. So one of us would tuck her in, turn the lights off, and sit on the floor (back turned towards her) and wait for her to fall asleep. At first some nights took 30 minutes but now she seems to fall asleep within 10 minutes.

She is almost 2.5 years old and I feel like she should be able to get tucked in, lights off, and not need us in the room. The two times I tried she got out of bed, turned the lights on and started playing with her doll and blankets. How old was your child when they would stay in their bed and fall asleep without you in the room?

Suggestion:

My oldest was about 3 when he started. We would usually tell him things like…"we are going to change into our pj's and we'll be right back!" We would go back, but he was usually asleep by then. Eventually we just stopped telling him anything and told him good night and lights out. My daughter has been sleeping in a toddler bed for about 2 months. She's 23 months now. I used to sit on the floor next to the bed until she fell asleep, but am preggo with #3 and sitting on the floor for 10-20 minutes every night is starting to get a little difficult! LOL!! I am due in 3 weeks. So, I started giving her a book to "read" to her "babies" and she goes for it! Takes the book, lies down and I can walk right out of the room without any problems!

I agree that at 2.5 you should be able to turn off the lights and leave without a problem. What would happen if you let her stay up and play? Would she eventually get back into bed and go to sleep? What about a music cd or a story cd?? My oldest likes to hear kids stories on cd while falling asleep sometimes…
