How to Put Yourself to Sleep

Lots of people find it difficult to get to sleep, especially with these uncertain economic times. Here are some proven ways of how to put yourself to sleep to help you get a good night’s rest.

Don’t watch the news late at night

The news tends to raise more questions than it answers. Which will set your mind racing, making it harder to get to sleep. If you must watch television before you go to sleep, choose a program that doesn’t challenge your mind.

Count those imaginary sheep – backwards

Yup. This still works! And it’s better when you count backwards. Starting with a few hundred sheep and working downwards. Don’t concentrate too hard and don’t worry if you lose count, that’s a sign of getting sleepier.

Take deep breaths and yawn

Deep breaths help us to relax. Yawning naturally makes us feel sleepier and it’s quite easy to force a yawn or two. So take a nice long deep breath whilst you’re yawning and see whether you feel sleepier.

Don’t concentrate on not falling asleep

It’s very easy to start becoming more and more awake as you focus your mind on not falling asleep. All those thoughts of “why can’t I get to sleep” race through your mind, making the likelihood of sleeping ever more remote.

Take a hot bath

Wallowing in a hot bath for a while before you go to sleep will help your mind and body to relax. Just take in the feeling of soaking in hot water and take note of any essential oils or other scents you’ve added to your bath.
