Is It Safe to Try to Lower Blood Pressure Quickly?

The simple answer to this question is no. It’s not safe to lower blood pressure quickly. It is necessary to bring the numbers down, but speed is usually not a good idea. In fact, if it can be fatal. Severe dizziness, fast heart rate and changes in breathing can happen. If it happens fast enough, you could pass out.

Instead of going for a fast drop, it’s necessary to bring it under control at a steady pace, preferably under a doctor’s care. That doesn’t mean you shouldn’t use natural or alternative methods, but this issue is too important to try to diagnose and prescribe for yourself.

High numbers can be the result of many things, and sometimes a combination of them. How it’s treated depends on the causes. Stress, weight issues, kidney problems, heart disease and pain can all drive the numbers up. As you can see by the diversity of causes, one all encompassing solution is unlikely to work for everyone.

Stress: We live in a stressful world. It can cause a lot of problems, including high BP, insomnia and anxiety attacks. Working through the stress and finding a way to reduce it is of paramount importance. Aromatherapy with lavender or chamomile essential oils can be useful. Herbal remedies may also be useful. Lavender, chamomile, jasmine and passionflower tea could help. Imaging is another route that could provide relief.

Weight issues: This needs to be dealt with to prevent life altering and life threatening medical conditions. Changing the diet is needed, as well as a proper exercise routine. Your doctor can help you choose the best program to use. Weight loss supplements may be useful for some, but they do have some interactions. Caffeine can raise blood pressure, so it’s best to avoid products containing it if you have the condition.

Kidney problems: There can be a vicious circle between high blood pressure and kidney disease. They can cause each other, and leaving one uncontrolled will ultimately cause big problems. Herbal remedies must be chosen carefully under these conditions, and control may be best done by diet. Eating a low sodium, low protein diet could be useful in putting off severe kidney disease.

Heart disease: Like kidney disease, there is a strong relationship between heart disease and high BP. Narrowing of the arteries can cause both problems. Garlic and fish oil supplements may help prevent or resolve this problem. Both can act as blood thinners and have other interactions, so check with your doctor before taking them if you are on medications.

Pain: It’s important to manage chronic pain, as it can lead to a rise in blood pressure. You may be able to use both medical and alternative methods in this condition. Pain relievers and anti-inflammatory medications are helpful, and topical applications of capsaicin or willow bark extracts could be as well. Avoid willow if you are allergic to aspirin.

Seeing the numbers on the doctor’s report may be a little frightening, but there are a lot of ways to bring them down to normal. Work with your doctor as part of the team and you may prevent some nasty consequences.
