Many people assume snoring is a sign of old age and is more associated with older men, although this is highly untrue and people of all ages and both sexes suffer with this condition. An apnea occurs when a person actually stops breathing for a split second and involuntarily wakes up,due to the brain realising that no air is coming to it, although the person will not realise this and this may happen many times during the course of sleep. It has been proven that the thickness of a persons neck is a determining factor in that the thicker a persons neck the more likely they are to suffer from this condition. Usually when you sleep you are lying down horizontally which causes the muscles in the neck to collapse making the air passageway smaller and as you breathe air is being forced through causing a vibration which is more commonly known as snoring. Losing weight is by far the most effective way to cure this problem and also exercise too helps greatly.
Many sleep study hospitals have sprung up over the last few years but can take a long time to get an appointment and even when you do the waiting time to receive treatment can also be lengthy. Cpap machines (continuous positive airway pressure) are small machines that send air down a tube which has a mask attached to the end which you place over your nose and once you begin breathing through it, it then kicks in and starts sending air through the pipe and into the mask which helps you breathe easier whilst you sleep and eliminates the throat muscles from collapsing, hence stopping the apneas immediately giving the patient a totally snore free night. The patient may not realise that when not using a cpap machine he or she may wake up many times during the night and subsequently feel tired, nausiated and irritable through lack of sleep. The use of chin straps is now becoming more frequent around the world but in my own personal experience using a cpap machine is probably the best way to overcome this problem due to the positive airflow that runs through the machine.
They also have the added benefit of having a small water chamber which moistens the air and stops the patient from getting a dry throat, whereas chin straps will not do this. Various nasal sprays are available too which help to unblock the nose as long as you continue to use them.
