Self-hypnosis – Learn the 6 Steps for Autosuggestion

I must emphasize that this article shows you how to prepare for self-hypnosis. In Step 5 of this article, you’ll come across the rather laconic instruction to ‘Hypnotize Yourself.’

Your natural re-action’s going to be; ‘What’s the old fool on about? He hasn’t told us how to do it yet.’ All will be revealed, I promise.

I think the best way I can describe the following is to say that autosuggestion is the nail, and hypnosis is the hammer! This does sound all rather drastic and violent, doesn’t it, but by the time you’ve finished reading, I think you’ll understand the analogy.

You may remember that it was Emile Coue who gave birth to autosuggestion and used it together with hypnosis and imagination. Interestingly enough, he was the one who gave us the saying:

‘Every day, in every way, I’m getting better and better.’ I wonder how often that’s been quoted?!

In our last article, we laid out the rules for preparing the autosuggestion. Now let’s buckle down and actually prepare to use it.

Step 1. Write Out Your Suggestion. Don’t forget the rules laid out in the last article. Be positive and logical. Setting your suggestions down on paper is a most important part of this exercise. Simply thinking them doesn’t create an anchor, nor does it clarify your ideas. Writing it down forces us to face the problem or desire we may have.

Step 2. Symbolize Your Suggestion. Think of a single, simple word that personifies your aim. For instance, if your wish is to lose weight, then perhaps the word ‘slim’ would be a good idea. Not ‘lose weight.’ That’s negative and that example shows you where you must be so very careful regarding negativity. The word ‘slim,’ too, conjures up a picture for you. You can see yourself as slim.

Step 3. Edit Your suggestion. Read it right through. Is it logical, positive, without ambiguity? Any doubts, then re-write and destroy the original copy.

Step 4. Read your suggestion aloud. This is a good idea with any form of writing, actually. It’s amazing how it can point out mistakes that a silent reading will miss. Make sure that every word means something. That it’s necessary. Don’t fluff anything up. Fluff only clogs the works!

Step 5. Hypnotize Yourself.

Step 6. Think About The Symbol you’ve already chosen. In this particular case it’s ‘slim.’ Before you actually start the process of hypnosis, read your suggestion slowly to yourself word for word, thereby giving yourself a sort of pre-hypnotic primer. You have, if you like, taken up your hammer! As you feel yourself relaxing, whisper or think the symbol to yourself. Just the symbol. Not; ‘I am slim.’ Just ‘slim.’

Other words or phrases from the suggestion you originally wrote down may well drift in and out of your mind. Allow yourself to make a picture of these. Perhaps see yourself in a bikini if you’re a lady, or a gentleman with strange tastes! Seriously, though, visualize acting as you’d like to act or as you’d like to be seen and admired. Feel the pleasure wash over you. Don’t try to think. Just let the feelings come and go and allow the visions to pop in and out of your head.

Remember that your conscious mind slows down as you enter the hypnotic state. This is why it’s necessary just to use a symbol
