Many people, for one reason or another, are scared of yoga. Some are afraid the teacher and class member might ring some bells, chant in a different language or twist themselves into a pretzel. The reality is, go to a general beginners yoga class. None of your fears will come true.
Yoga teachers in general are kind and helpful people. Their goal is to make you feel comfortable and come back to the class, not to scare you away.
If you are still worried. Try a yoga video, many can be found on amazon. My suggestion- go with a Gaiam DVD. They are reputable and you will get guidance from the comfort of your home.
At the very least, start a regular stretching routine. Simple stretches while sitting on the floor watching TV will help more than you can imagine. Yes, stretching and yoga are going to be a bit uncomfortable in the beginning. But give it 2 or 3 days. You will see a change in the way you feel, the way you stand up, how you sleep, in general, everyday life will be more comfortable.
There are other benefits to yoga and stretching. You will lengthen the muscles, decreasing tightness and stress in them. In turn, the loosen muscles will release tension in your entire body, helping you to feel more relaxed. With all of those benefits, hey- It’s worth a try!
