Turn Your Bathroom into a Sensual Spa Retreat

There’s nothing lovelier than coming home after a long day to relax and indulge in some sensual and luxurious bath time. Hot water and plenty of steam can do wonders for restoring a peaceful — and even playful — state of mind. Here are five easy and affordable ways you can enjoy some fabulous spa time right in the privacy of your own home. You might even invite your man in to share these spa delights and create a little steam of your own together!

1. Handheld Massage Shower Head
Is there anything more fabulous than having your man wash your hair? Well, yeah, you can probably think of a few possibilities for a man, a shower, and plenty of steam! So lay some hot and delicious plans!

One of the easiest home spa tricks of all is to get a handheld massage shower head. These range from $20 to $60, and installation is easy enough for beginners. A handheld allows you to direct the delicious, pulsing jets anywhere you like. He may start with your hair, but it may not end there!

2. Low lighting
Even if your bathroom is itty-bitty (Ok, I hear all you NYC girlfriends saying “What bathroom??”) you can still change the lighting. Who wants a mini-spa experience under a bank of heavy-duty light bulbs? So move a tiny end table into your bathroom and plant a lamp on it. Get a colored lampshade to add atmosphere or drape your lamp (with LED or cool flourescent bulbs only!) with a favorite scarf.

You can even string up some holiday lights in there to shift it out of your normal businesslike gotta-get-to-work mood. Every holiday that rolls around seems to bring with it a selection of specially-themed lights; if you wait until after the holiday you can pick up your light strings at bargain prices.

A few candles can have the same effect. I like to use sturdy pillar candles inside of hurricane shades; that way you’re less likely to catch the edge of a towel or tissue, which could have a disastrous effect on your mini-spa.

3. Clear, Unfogged Mirror and Shower Door

When you’re indulging in a spa treatment at home you want to be able to see in the mirror as you apply your masks and various yummy body treatments. And don’t discount the power of a mirror if you and your man get up to some delectable spa massage and other… interactions. If you have a clear shower door like mine, you’ll want to keep it from steaming over so you can easily view (and join, if desired) any soaping-up action in there.

Head out to your local auto parts store and pick up a little spray bottle of windshield defogger (I’ve used RainX). It will set you back less than $5 and only takes a minute to treat your whole bathroom.

4. Towel Warmer

A heated towel rack is one of the more expensive home-spa upgrades (you can a small one that plugs into the wall for $60 to $100), but it’s also one of the most luxurious, particularly when you’re trying to create a warm, cozy oasis in a drafty house or apartment in the middle of winter.

Indulge yourself in a brand new fluffy towel in your favorite color, too!

5. Bath Pillow
The perfect step up from a rolled-up towel (mine always fall into the tub), a marvelously cushion-y bath pillow is just the thing for a relaxing soak. Most bath pillows have suction cups for easy positioning, and Earth Therapeutics makes a nice one for under $10 with a plush, removable cover made of naturally anti-bacterial bamboo fibers.

Add your own aromatheraputic scents (I like lavender, ylang-ylang, and vanilla bath oils), your favorite recipes for homemade facials, scrubs or body oils, and let your own little haven of rest and relaxation surround you.
