When people find themselves in situations of high stress they revert to coping mechanisms that can include overeating or drinking too much alcohol. A side affect of being over stressed is feeling tired and exhausted and many people use caffeine to perk themselves up.
Caffeine taken in moderation does not pose a health problem, actually it can be good for you. However, when it is taken large quantities it can become unhealthy. Drinking too much caffeine can increase the levels of the stress hormone catecholamine.
Caffeine is not only found in coffee as it is also found in chocolate, cola drinks, and energy drinks.
When taken in large quantities it can elevate our stress levels and this can be made worse when we experience a stressful situation. Caffeine increases our heart rate and over time if it continues can overwork the heart. If you have an underlying heart problem then this can lead to serious health complications in the future.
Although, caffeine can improve alertness and concentration it can affect our sleeping patterns especially if it is consumed late in the evening. When taken in large quantities caffeine can affect our digestive system by over stimulating the production of stomach acid. Over time this can lead to indigestion, acid reflux and stomach ulcers.
There is also some medical research that links large consumptions of caffeine to an increase in blood cholesterol especially during times of stress. If this is combined with eating an unhealthy diet that is high in saturated fats with little to no exercise this can lead to serious health complications.
